Presidential Election in Ukraine January 18, 2010

January 17th, 2010 was an important day for us who live in Nikolaev Ukraine. It was the day of Ukrainian presidential election. The official results of yesterday’s election haven’t been announced yet but you can see the results of different exit polls here.

The battle between Victor Yanukovich, Julia Timoshenko, Sergiy Tigipko, Arseniy Yatsenyuk, Volodymyr Lytvyn, Victor Yushchenko and other candidates has been full of drama and suspense in which all candidates have tried to gain the confidence and trust of people but none of them have been able to find the full support or a comfort zone of winning the elections easily. As a result the second tour of Ukrainian presidential election is announced on February 7th, 2010.

We who live in Nikolaev Ukraine are now waiting for the second tour of presidential election – the day when we’ll have to vote if the next president of Ukraine will be Victor Yanukovich or Julia Timoshenko.

NOTE Ukrainian presidential election is held every five years and each year presidential election campaign is about endless promises, slogans, new strategies, etc. Still it’s also about hopes for a happy future for everyone who lives in Nikolaev and other Ukrainian cities.

Heavy Snow in Nikolaev Ukraine December 20, 2009

Last week I’ve published a post telling about the first snow in Nikolaev Ukraine this year. When writing that post I was thinking the snow would melt quickly (because it happened so for 2 or three winters in a row) but I was wrong. Not only the snow didn’t melt but it was falling and falling. As a result Nikolaev Ukraine is now covered with snow. The cars and buses move so slowly that it’s much faster to go on foot. A road to Odessa and a road to Kherson have been closed for a few days now.

People who live in Nikolaev Ukraine have missed the winter and now you can see many of them sledding or just walking and sticking in the snow. Everything would be find if there was someone to clean the roads and pavements from the snow but till then, please take a look at the pictures I’ve taken in the streets of Nikolaev Ukraine.

Winter Has Come to Nikolaev Ukraine December 11, 2009

Hurray!!! Today, we who live in Nikolaev have seen the first show! It was falling at night and throughout the day and it’ll melt shortly but it definitely marks the beginning of winter in Nikolaev Ukraine!

We are so happy to see the snow because it doesn’t happen often in Nikolaev. A few years ago we had really snowy winters and everyone could have fun and play snowballs, go ice-skating at the river or make snowmen. However, the last three or four winters have been quite warm and therefore were reminding a never-ending autumn. The average temperature has been between 0ºC and +10ºC (between +32ºF and +50ºF) and soon we’ll see what this winter holds for Nikolaev Ukraine.

The first snow has brought a new atmosphere and now it feels like a true winter!

Hopefully this winter there will be a lot of snowy days in Nikolaev Ukraine!
